Strategic Planning Webinar

Dear Community Partners,

We've seen an increased need for organizations to refresh their strategic plans. Organizations are still navigating the volatile political context and social challenges from COVID-19. Many are unsure about how to proceed with a commitment to their staff, community impact, and justice. Strategic plans help you navigate these challenges purposefully and effectively.

Nonprofit Quarterly (NPQ) has invited me to be on a webinar panel, Setting Bold Strategy: Relevant Approaches to Strategy and Strategic Planning. I hope you can join! It will be live and take place on June 6th, 2024: 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM Eastern Time/12 PM to 1:30 PM Pacific Time. The panel is composed of smart, thoughtful and experienced strategists: Carlos, Cuesta, Founder and Managing Partner at Creating in Common, Kathy Garcia, Director, Program Initiatives and Learning at Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and myself.

Whether you are in the middle of strategic planning, considering it, or just beginning to implement your strategic plan, this panel will be informative and provide practical tools and approaches. You can register by clicking the button below.

Strategic planning often feels daunting and unproductive. In our experience, it clarifies direction and empowers staff. Recently, we partnered with the Oakland Museum of California (OMCA) to help define their new strategic plan. The updated plan took root across the organization and how they approached financial planning and business development.

At OMCA, we challenged the notion of sustainability as the primary driver of financial health and asked: What if we broadened our definition of financial health beyond mere budgets? Could we then view our budgets as a generative force for collective action? How would our perspective shift if we saw finances as the connective tissue driving social change across sectors and communities, rather than as scarce resources to be balanced?

Their bold and innovative work received the attention of the American Alliance of Museums and we were asked to write about the new financial ethos in their magazine and present at the annual conference of museums on May 17th. The article, Striking a Balance: The Oakland Museum of California has changed its financial decision-making to prioritize social cohesion can be found here. We hope you find this  thought provoking.
